Are Indians Socially Irresponsible?

The following is the script of the speech I gave at the DCRUST Annual Fest in November 2014.

Social Responsibility is a moral belief where we as individuals, have a responsibility toward society. Being “socially responsible” is about all individuals behaving ethically and sensitively towards social, economic, and environmental issues. It is about being accountable for our actions and being conscious of the impact your actions have on others, our communities, and the environment.
By taking an active participation in resolving some of the issues, we as individuals should all strive to set good examples by applying and adhering to socially responsible practices, such as improving the quality of lives for individuals and their families, volunteer energy and time towards improving and benefitting society. Now the question arises- Are Indians Socially Irresponsible?

“Irresponsible”! The word echoes through my head and suddenly I am reminded of the 16 the December Delhi Gang Rape. The event has been in the public eye for so long that it needn’t be repeated on this platform but what should be voiced from this pulpit is the apathy of the public in general and police “our so called guardians” in particular who treated the victim just as a victim and not a human being. Protests were held nationwide but where was this junta when the woman lay naked on the road while her partner pleaded the public to help them. And this is not just one incident. Being socially irresponsible is not limited to being insensitive towards women crimes or road accidents which we happen to pass by thinking” People die on roads everyday”. It has many layers , many faces. Are we not being socially irresponsible when we throw the wrapper outside the bus? Are we not being socially irresponsible when we take a dip in Ganga washing away our sins without giving a second glance to the moving mass of sewage, solid waste and industrial effluents our sacred /worshipped rivers have become? Are we not being socially irresponsible when we don’t find it awkward when a “Chottu” serves us chai at a Murthal Dhaba!

Introspect Indians. Iurge you to introspect and see how low we have become today.  This the same country where the drainage system was first developed in Harrapan Civilization to keep the settlements clean. This is the same country where we offered our food and clothes to the ones who needed it more than us. This is the same country where the 239 Bishnois were slaughtered for protecting trees.

Situation is grave today , we all know it . But as they say:  optimism never fails, hope never dies. I saw a rayof hope , when the youth came forward and casted their vote this election season to end corruption. I feel proud of the work done by various NGOs: Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Teach Indian Campaign ,Naarmada Bacaho Andolan , Kailash satyarthi ji bagging the Nobel Peace Prize for our country.

What can I do For You? I want You to know

My heart is Yours

It’s not a question of what You can do for me

But what can I do For You?

If everyone, including me, could only grasp the real meaning of all that could be accomplished with this attitude, our country could be a better place.Everyone has the social responsibility to give back to society. Embrace this and ask the question, “What can I do for you?”
